World’s first comprehensive AI law
The EU Parliament has endorsed the AI Act, the world's first comprehensive AI law, after three years of deliberation.
The law bans high-risk and unethical AI applications while promoting innovation.
It prohibits social scoring systems, facial recognition, emotion recognition, predictive policing based on profiling, and AI that manipulates human behavior or exploits vulnerabilities.
The more advanced the AI, the stricter the regulations. General purpose AI must meet basic transparency requirements, while advanced systems face additional compliance measures. Artificial audio, images, and videos must be clearly labeled. EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola praised the law as "trailblazing" and respectful of human rights, while Commissioner Thierry Breton referred to it as "trusted AI" regulation.
